ABOUT

I’m Mat Fretschel, a Los Angeles-based photographer with a background in fine art photography and experience across portraiture, entertainment, events, weddings, product, and commercial work.

I grew up in South Carolina, where my interest in photography began after a high school art teacher encouraged me to take his photography class. From that point on, I rarely found myself without a camera. That early encouragement eventually led me to Winthrop University, where I earned a degree in Fine Art Photography.

After college, I spent time working in New York and Atlanta before making Los Angeles my home. Along the way, I assisted photographers working across the product, catalog, fashion, beauty, and entertainment industries. I continue to work with some of those photographers in Los Angeles, and those experiences have helped broaden my technical skills and understanding of commercial production.

Currently, I work as the senior photographer for Walt Disney Animation Studios while continuing to photograph a wide variety of projects for individuals, artists, brands, studios, and creative professionals.

My approach is straightforward and collaborative, with an emphasis on creating polished, purposeful images suited to the needs of each project.

I’m available for assignments throughout Southern California and select projects worldwide.
